Like a Child

We shy from sunlight
to hide in the shadowed darkness
of mighty trees
above us
because the light is-
blinding
and the heat is-
searing.

We seek reprieve
from what we are
from what is good.
We make excuses
to preserve our false
beauty,
ignoring the true
glory of God's light.

We know
yet don't act,
willing all to go away
to indulge in
selfish desires.
We are asking for judgement
just as an errant child
baits its forbearing father.
